hdcc-a-christmas-carol-collageJOSHUA TREE, CA – The Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s prestigious Hi-Desert Playhouse theater division will open its newest production, Charles Dickens’ A CHRISTMAS CAROL as adapted by Doris Baizley this Friday December 2, 2016, which will run for two weekends.  As a top awarded leading theater company in the Southern California desert region, the Hi-Desert Playhouse’s unique presentation of Dickens’ classic story has been creatively re-imagined by award-winning Playhouse Artistic Director Howard Shangraw and will star Barry Cutler as Ebenezer Scrooge, reprising his leading role at the famed Mark Taper Forum.

Doris Baizley’s stage adaptation of this family favorite holiday classic is an energetic and creative romp through the Charles Dickens story told by a “ragtag” troupe of traveling players made up of actors, puppets, clowns, and mimes.  The magical world of make-believe comes to life as the troupe’s trunk of supplies magically opens and this timeless Christmas tale of redemption spills out, pulling us into the life of Ebenezer Scrooge.  In addition to Barry Cutler’s appearance in this production, this Playhouse favorite’s other appearances include SHYLOCK, for which he won a Desert Theatre League Award for Outstanding Lead Male Performer, and the role of Scrooge in last year’s world premier of Charles Evered’s AN ACTOR’S CAROL, which won a “Best Original Writing” award.  Playhouse audiences will recognize other familiar faces: Haley Kooyman (THE SPITFIRE GRILL) takes on the role of Christmas Present; Miri Hunter (THE SPITFIRE GRILL, MOTHERHOOD OUT LOUD) charms as the Ghost of Christmas Past; Christopher Schoonover and Dawn Davis, (both recently seen in the smash hit DRACULA,) play Bob Cratchit and Mrs. Fezziwig respectively; and Bianca Stoker (MOTHERHOOD OUT LOUD) plays Mrs. Cratchit.  The Playhouse’s award-winning Artistic Director, Howard Shangraw, (RED) haunts the production as Jacob Marley and ArtsTech Academy Program student actors Nathan Bosworth, Aidan Bosworth and D. J. Briggs bring to life the roles of Tiny Tim, Nephew Fred, and Fred’s Wife.  William Hart (Director of THE ALIENS) makes his Playhouse acting debut as MR. FEZZIWIG.
