JOSHUA TREE, CA — On the very day that King George VI announces England’s entrance into World War II, two intellectual giants of the 20th century, devout atheist Sigmund Freud and devout Christian C.S. Lewis, meet and go toe-to-toe on the question of “Is there a God?”  A brilliant play of ideas filled with humanity, humor, and razor-sharp dialogue, Freud’s Last Session is the Hi-Desert Playhouse’s newest reader’s theater production that will play one performance only this Friday, November 10th at 7pm as part of its award-winning Reader’s Theater Series at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center.

As far as we know, C.S. Lewis and Sigmund Freud never met, but playwright Mark St. Germain imagines the meeting  — and what ensues is a profound debate on the greatest questions of all time.  Directed by award-winning Playhouse Artistic Director Howard Shangraw, this thought provoking battle of the minds gives food for thought with no final answer; but rather gives insight into the hearts and souls of these two extraordinary thinkers and offers a riveting piece of theater.  The production stars returning Playhouse actors Derrik Lewis and Doran Ray, with Lewis playing the perfect Freud and Ray brilliantly playing his sparring partner, C.S. Lewis.  Derrik Lewis is the recipient of multiple acting awards from the Desert Theatre League and was most recently nominated for his humorous and poignant portrayal of “God” in the Playhouse’s world premiere production of The Goldfish Letters.  Lewis also starred in the Playhouse production of Dracula.  Doran Ray last appeared in the uproarious Playhouse production of Almost, Maine, received a Desert Theatre League lead actor nomination for his portrayal of the quirky and insightful Hertel in Dog Logic, and also appeared in Playhouse productions, The Spitfire Grill and The Aliens.  Winner of the “2011 Off-Broadway Best Play,” Freud’s Last Session played for two years Off-Broadway, and has since been seen around the world.

Where directors, playwrights, and actors rehearse and present exceptional reader’s theater, the Playhouse’s “Fridays! Reader’s Theater Series” showcases superb acting talent in a professional setting with an intent to create thoughtful discussion and social community for live theater actors and enthusiasts.  Freud’s Last Session has a suggested rating of “PG-13” and no children under 5 are admitted.  General admission tickets are only $10 and include one drink ticket.  A cash bar is also available.
