JOSHUA TREE — The Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s acclaimed Hi-Desert Playhouse theater division has cast a brilliant ensemble of players for its latest stage musical, THE SPITFIRE GRILL, that will play February 12-20 at the Center’s Blak Box Theater.  The cast members include Miri Hunter, Haley Kooyman, Analisa Pilecki, Doran Ray, Leah Taylor, and Alexander Warren.  Written by the esteemed team of James Valcq and Fred Alley, and heralded by The New York Times as “an irresistable show,” this exciting production also features a live band of musicians whose music underscores the warm American bluegrass vocal performances of the production’s award-winning cast.  The Playhouse’s production is under the direction of Playhouse Artistic Director Howard Shangraw with music direction by Nelms McKelvain.

The play’s themes shift easily between lighthearted one-liners and profound moments of hope, and the characters immediately captivate the audience.  This incredible cast of local actors fill their characters with a depth and honesty that is thrilling, and, oh, can they sing!  THE SPITFIRE GRILL shines on so many levels and is sure to touch the heart of every single theatergoer.Howard Shangraw, Playhouse Artistic Director

Taking place in the fictional town of Gilead, Wisconsin, the play begins with a haunting opening number, sung by the heroine Perchance Talbot (played by Haley Kooyman). Recently released from jail, Percy arrives in Gilead with the hopes of making a fresh start.  She gains employment at the Spitfire Grill, and finds unlikely kinship with its gruff owner, Hannah (played by Miri Hunter), and Hannah’s meek niece-in-law, Shelby (Analisa Pilecki).  Hannah wants to sell the grill, and the three girls devise an essay contest to raffle it off.  The best essay wins the contest and the grill.  Add to the mix Hannah’s disillusioned nephew Caleb (Alexander Warren), Percy’s Parole kindly officer Joe (Doran Ray) and the local busybody Effy (Leah Taylor).

Tickets for THE SPITFIRE GRILL are $15-$24 and may be purchased online at www.hidesertculturalcenter.org, by visiting the Hi-Desert Cultural Center Box Office in person Monday through Friday from 1-5pm, or by calling the Box Office at 760.366.3777 from 9am – 5pm.  The Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s multi-theater complex is located at 61231 Hwy 62 in Joshua Tree, CA.
