JOSHUA TREE, CA — The Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s famed Hi-Desert Playhouse theater division will open its psychedelic new smash musical, GODSPELL, this Friday and will play for two weekends only at the Cultural Center’s state-of-the-art Blak Box Theater in Joshua Tree.  Written and composed by Stephen Schwartz with book by John-Michael Tebelak, the Playhouse invites audience goers to experience award-winning theater and live music as it recreates one of the most iconic hit musicals of the 1970s.

Told through parables from the Gospel of Matthew and an eclectic blend of songs from pop to vaudeville, including “Day By Day,” “Prepare Ye The Way Of The Lord” andBy My Side,” GODSPELL delivers a message of kindness, tolerance, friendship and love.  The live band featuring MacKinley Stewart on guitar, Greg Gordon on drums and Cooper Gillespie on bass is musically directed by Nelms McKelvain, who also plays keyboard.  Directed by the Desert Theatre League’s 2016 most nominated individual and winner of the coveted “Outstanding Director” award for a musical in the professional division, Playhouse Artistic Director Howard Shangraw, GODSPELL stars the talented cast of Scott Clinkscales, Analisa Pilecki, Haley Kooyman, Elizabeth Schmelling, Jasmine Shaffer, Aidan Bosworth and Gilbert Pinela.  The funky, decked out kaleidoscopic set and lighting design by Matthew Garret and Michael Mora and flower child costumes by Amy Angel give an authentic nod to the bygone dawning of the Age of Aquarius.  GODSPELL was the first major musical from a young Stephen Schwartz, who went on to write the Tony Award winning Wicked and Pippin.  It became a sensation that lives on to this day as a celebration of strength and forgiveness.

GODSPELL will play through April 9 and has a suggested rating of PG.  Show tickets range from $15-$24 with group discounts available.  A cash bar and complimentary light refreshments are offered before and during each show.  Performances are Friday and Saturday evenings at 7pm with a Sunday matinee at 2:30pm on April 9.  Must be at least 5 years of age to attend.  To purchase tickets or for more information patrons may visit www.hidesertculturalcenter.org, call the Box Office at 760.366.3777, or visit the Hi-Desert Cultural Center Box Office in person Monday through Friday from 1-5pm.  The Hi-Desert Cultural Center is located at 61231 Hwy 62 in Joshua Tree, CA.
