JOSHUA TREE, CA — The Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s prestigious Hi-Desert Playhouse theater division is opening the first production of its new highly-anticipated “First Fridays! Reader’s Theater” series October 2, 2015 at 7pm at the Center’s state-of-the-art Blak Box Theater. Where directors, playwrights, and actors rehearse and present exceptional reader’s theater, the new series will showcase superb acting talent in a professional setting with an intent to create thoughtful discussion and social community for live theater actors and enthusiasts. General admission tickets are only $7 and include a complimentary beverage.

Written by Jon Robin Baitz and directed by Suzanne Avalon, the new “First Fridays! Reader’s Theater” series will open with a 2012 Pulitzer Prize for Drama finalist Other Desert Cities and will feature an all-star cast: Meg Wolfe (CBS’s The Mentalist; FX’s American Horror Story; and ABC’s Private Practice), Howard Shangraw (Star Trek: Deep Space Nine; The Fantastic Four; South Coast Repertory Theatre), Suzanne Avalon (Off-Broadway, TV & film, producer, director and actress; Founder/President Idyllwild Actor’s Theatre), Jeri Greene (celebrated Inland Theatre League actress; award-winning playwright), and Abram Rees-Davies (Idyllwild Arts Academy graduate).

Earning what the New York Times calls, “The most richly enjoyable new play for grown-ups that New York has known in many seasons,” Other Desert Cities is the story of Brooke Wyeth who returns home to Palm Springs, after a six-year absence, to celebrate Christmas with her parents, her brother, and her aunt. Brooke announces that she is about to publish a memoir dredging up a pivotal and tragic event in the family’s history—a wound they don’t want reopened. In effect, she draws a line in the sand and dares them all to cross it. “Spending time with these messed-up, complicated people is a genuine pleasure.” —NY Post. “Power, passion, and superbly crafted palaver stippled with blowdarts of wit—this is what Baitz does best.” —New York Magazine.
