JOSHUA TREE, CA — The Hi-Desert Playhouse presents its fourth Reader’s Theater production of the 2017-2018 season with Ellen MacClaughlin’s TONGUE OF A BIRD.  Hailed as “Emotionally powerful… and intensely satisfying” by the Seattle Times, the Playhouse’s newest reader’s theater production will play one performance only this Friday, April 27th at 7pm as part of its award-winning Reader’s Theater Series at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center.

Directed by Playhouse Artistic Director Howard Shangraw and starring Dawn Davis, Cooper Gillespie, Miri Hunter, Haley Kooyman and ArtsTech Academy student Gaia Gainey, TONGUE OF A BIRD tells the story of Maxine, a search and rescue pilot, who returns in midwinter to her childhood home in the Adirondacks.  There she conducts a search for a girl who, while on a field trip in the mountains, was abducted by a stranger in a black pick up truck.  The search lasts for three days. Each night Maxine must face the girl’s distraught mother, Dessa, and her own grandmother, Zofia, a reclusive Polish refugee.  In sleep, Maxine is prey to nightmares and fragmented memories of a mother who abandoned her in childhood and was lost to insanity.  Cherry Jones starred Off Broadway in this powerful consideration of the notions of loss, motherhood and the vexed yearning for release.

Where directors, playwrights, and actors rehearse and present exceptional reader’s theater, the Playhouse’s “Fridays! Reader’s Theater Series” showcases superb acting talent in a professional setting with an intent to create thoughtful discussion and social community for live theater actors and enthusiasts.  TONGUE OF A BIRD has a suggested rating of “R” and no children under 5 are admitted.  General admission tickets are only $10 and include one drink ticket.  A cash bar is also available.
