JOSHUA TREE, CA – With an incomparable 50-year tradition of award-winning theater, the Hi-Desert Cultural Center is proud to present Samuel Shem and Janet Surrey’s award-winning play, BILL W. & Dr. BOB for a special one night engagement on Saturday May 31, 2014 at 7pm at the Center’s state-of-the-art Blak Box Theater. Theatergoers will also be treated to theARTISTS Galleries’ final week of fine art on display featuring works by acclaimed artists D.H. Morris and S.E. James.
Starring professional actors Ron Young and Dean Apple accompanied by a highly accomplished cast and crew, BILL W. & Dr. BOB tells an internationally acclaimed and magnificent American success story. Richly textured with the ragtime and jazz of the era, the story opens during the roaring ’20s as New York stockbroker Bill Wilson rides high on money, fame, and booze. In ’29, both he and the market crash and he becomes a hopeless drunk. Dr. Bob Smith, a surgeon in Akron, Ohio and a pillar of the community, has been a secret drinker for 30 years, often going into the operating room hungover and high on sedatives. His family has tried everything to help, but to no avail. Through an astonishing series of events involving doctors, ministers, the Oxford Group evangelical movement, and Henrietta Sieberling a scion of the Goodyear Rubber fortune, Bill and Bob meet on Mother’s Day in 1935. The two men form a relationship which keeps each other sober. Fired up by this success, they seek out a third drunk to see if their program will work for others. Don’t miss this riveting drama to see how this tale “ends” while spawning a new beginning for millions of others.
Esteemed painters and visual artists S.E. James and D.H. Morris are currently being featured in theARTISTS Galleries at Hi-Desert Cultural Center. The works are also being offered for sale during the show BILL W. & Dr. BOB. James has won many awards and is garnering national attention for her unique and beautiful paintings and pyrography on Joshua Tree wood and her unique miniatures. Some of James’ featured pieces include “Cactus Splash”, “Bigger Than Life”, and “Palm Canyon”, among others. Morris, whose has garnered many awards for her work in watercolor, acrylic, oil, and mixed-media, is featuring works that create an “uplifting experience for the beholder.” Some of Morris’ featured pieces include “Barker Dam Heights” and “Early Morning Pinnacle”, among others.
