JOSHUA TREE, CA — The Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s prestigious Hi-Desert Playhouse theater division will be opening the first full-scale stage production of its new 2015-2016 season with John Logan’s RED, a sizzling 90-minute drama hailed as one of the most intellectually riveting shows to recently hit Broadway.  Winner of six Tony Awards and directed by acclaimed director Howard Shangraw, RED will open Friday, October 30 and play Fridays at 7pm and Saturdays at 2pm and 7pm through November 7.  A cash bar will be available at all performances.

“What do you see?”

Famed abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko asks his young new assistant, Ken, the loaded question.

“What’s art? And who gets to decide anyway?”

The year is 1958, and famed abstract expressionist painter Mark Rothko has just been presented the greatest and most lucrative commission in the history of modern art: a commission to create murals for the exclusive Four Seasons restaurant in the new Seagram Building in New York City. With the arrival of his new assistant, Rothko takes on the role of teacher and mentor, justifying his artistic choices and expounding on a wide-ranging philosophical discussion of art and its meaning. For the next two years the tormented and temperamental Rothko faces his demons and works fanatically to create what is to be known as the Seagram Murals. When challenged by Ken, Rothko is faced with the agonizing likelihood that his crowning triumph could also be his fatal undoing.

RED will star acclaimed actor/director and Hi-Desert Playhouse Artistic Director Howard Shangraw as Mark Rothko and Arthur Pembrook as Rothko’s young assistant, Ken.  Howard Shangraw, who has directed at Manhattan Theater Club in New York, American Academy of Dramatic Arts, Pacific Resident Theatre, Matrix Theatre, and who has won international awards for directing including from the AACT Festival in Barcelona, has also been active in film and television appearing in films such as Raging AngelsThe Fantastic Four, and What I Did For Love and in television series such as Star Trek: Deep Space NineCagney and LaceyFrasierHill Street BluesAlfred Hitchcock PresentsWings, and The Judge.  Arthur Pembrook is a recent honors graduate of Idyllwild Arts Academy and is a familiar face to audiences of Palm Canyon Theatre playing roles in The King and I, The Full Monty, Beauty and the Beast and Oliver!
