Mil-Tree & Hi-Desert Cultural Center Host Writing/Acting Workshop with Christian Camargo
JOSHUA TREE, CA – Mil-Tree and Hi-Desert Cultural Center have partnered to offer a unique opportunity for veterans, active military, and their families: a free one-day writing and dramatic storytelling workshop led by well-known stage and screen actor Christian Camargo (Twilight, Dexter, National Treasure). The unique workshop will take place Saturday July 30, 2016 from 10am to 4:30pm at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s state-of-the-art Blak Box Theater.
“There is a great power in drama, and “Speak the Speech” is a one-day workshop that will introduce participants to the power and challenge of dramatic writing and performing,” stated Christian Camargo.
Within a few hours participants will peek into the craft of drama, using their own bodies and experiences as templates. For thousands of years dramatic storytelling fostered language, resolved conflict, preserved culture, and instilled moral values. This one-day workshop is designed to give participants a brief glimpse of basic structure and introductory performance tools of this age old craft.
Christian Camargo began his career as an actor in New York and London theaters after graduating from Juilliard School of Drama. Broadway and Off Broadway productions include Arthur Miller’s All My Sons, David Hare’s Skylight (Theater World Award), the Public’s Kit Marlowe, Hamlet (Obie Award and Drama League nomination) and recently Pericles directed by Trevor Nunn. Christian was an inaugural company member of Shakespeare’s Globe Theater in London (Henry V, A Chaste Maid in Cheapside) and a company member of The Bridge Project (As You Like It, The Tempest) directed by Sam Mendes. Film and television include Kathryn Bigelow’s K19 the Widowmaker, Hurt Locker, Showtime’s Dexter, National Treasure: Book of Secrets, Sci Fi’s Haven, Europa Report, both installments of Twilight: Breaking Dawn, and most recently Showtime’s Penny Dreadful. In addition to acting, Christian has written, produced, developed, and directed documentaries and televised drama including MTV’s Fast Inc., History Channel’s Full Throttle, and Palm Picture/Rock Star Games Sunday Driver. In 2015 Christian wrote and directed IFC’s Days and Nights starring William Hurt, Allison Janney, Katie Holmes, Ben Wishaw and Jean Reno. Christian’s sole residence is in Joshua Tree, where he writes and resides between jobs.

Important: This is an immersive workshop where all are encouraged to participate so wear clothes to move in (ideally dark tones with no logos, patterns or pictures please!) and bring pen and paper. Don’t let movement discourage, if movement is challenging that’s okay. We will have something for everyone regardless of age and ability. There is nothing greater than to challenge, open and explore oneself, the environment and community in the safe space of the stage, using story and drama as metephor and guide. There is no goal here other than discovering “play” and the creative force, expression and health within oneself.
