The legendary spoken word fundraising event to help rebuild the Kaye Ballard Theater will feature new eclectic & celebrity artists

JOSHUA TREE, CA – The legendary Desert Stories spoken word event returns for its fifth year to the Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s Blak Box Theater on Saturday, January 28, 2012 at 7pm.  The event traditionally sells out, and this year is expected to be no exception as the event features exciting new eclectic and celebrity artists.  Tickets are now on sale for Desert Stories V, a benefit fundraiser to help rebuild the historic and newly named Kaye Ballard Theater.

“Spoken Word” is a popular form of literary art or artistic performance in which lyrics, poetry, or stories are spoken and may include singing and multi-media visual effects.  Artist and event host, Cheryl Montelle, invites you to come hear more “true-life” experiences and a few “tall tales” from some of the Desert’s best storytellers and some special guests.  This year’s event will feature Rock & Roll Hall of Famer, Eric Burdon, of The Animals, David Butterfield, Bea Chambers, Michael DiGregorio, Jill Giegerich, Julia Heyward, George Kopp, Louise Mathias, Ruth Nolan, Joel Newman, and Hilary Sloane, among others.

Desert Stories is a fantastic fusion of spoken word, multimedia, art and theater. After receiving a matching donation of $175,000 and having just launched a 90-day dollar-for-dollar fundraising campaign to rebuild the iconic Kaye Ballard Theater, this event couldn’t have come at a better time as we continue to raise private donations and promote the incredible artistry of our Desert area residents.Jarrod Radnich, HDCC President

Desert Stories V will begin with a pre-show social party at 6:30pm with performances beginning shortly after 7pm on Saturday January 28, 2012 at the Hi-Desert Cultural Center’s state-of-the-art Blak Box Theater.  Tickets are $20.  Hors d’oeuvres and a no-host cash bar will be available.  For more information and/or tickets, call the box office at 760.366.3777 to talk to a “real” person or purchase tickets online at www.hidesertculturalcenter.com.
